Welcome back to our free Child’s Faux Leather Crossbody Bag Sew-Along, presented by SINGER®! During this four-week sew-along, we are making a cute crossbody bag for autumn—and some bonus projects as well! The crossbody bag was designed by Alicia Welcher, assistant editor of Classic Sewing magazine, and the videos are presented by Soni Grint, director of education for SINGER® and HUSQVARNA® VIKING® in North America.

If you are just now joining us, be sure to first catch up on Lesson 1 and Lesson 2. This third lesson covers the lining and finishing. The lessons will explore the SINGER® MOMENTO™ cutting machine and how you can use this as another tool in your sewing room—as well as in many other crafting endeavors! While you do not have to use a cutting machine to participate in the sew-along, several of its features make these projects fast and easy. Be sure to enter the giveaway for your chance to win your own SINGER® MOMENTO™ (valued at $849.99). Visit our sew-along homepage to enter. The lessons also feature the HUSQVARNA® VIKING® DESIGNER EPIC 3 sewing and embroidery machine.

Creating the Lining

1. Center and fuse interfacing to wrong side of body linings.

2. Center and fuse squares of interfacing 1-1/8” below top edge of body linings (on top of first interfacing) (see photo 1).

3. Mark and clip magnetic snap placement on square of interfacing as follows:

4. Measure 1-1/2” down from top edge of lining fabric.

5. Measure 1/4” to each side of center and mark a dot.

6. Draw a vertical line 1/4” long down from marked dots (photo 1).

7. Cut a slit on each line.

8. Place the lining front to the lining back with right sides together. Stitch the sides and bottom (U shape) using a 1/4” seam allowance. Leave a hole in one long side for turning. Hole should not extend above the marked snap placement nor into the curve at the bottom (photo 2).

Putting It All Together

1. Place the faux leather “bucket” into the lining “bucket” with right sides together. The strap holders/D-rings should be sandwiched between the layers.

2. Align the side seams and the top edges well and stitch all the way around using a 3/8” seam allowance.

3. Turn purse right side out through the hole in the lining. Push the lining down into the outer purse, snug the fabric down to the raw edge of the leather at the top, creating a faux binding. DO NOT close hole yet.

4. Stitch-in-the-ditch around the top.

5. Insert magnetic snap through hole in lining (one piece to each side). Close the hole by whipstitching by hand or use a straight stitch near the fold.

6. Center and fuse long strips of interfacing to the wrong side of the 12-1/2” x 2” fabric strips.

7. Stitch the short ends of the three strips together to create one long strip. Press seams open. Fold and stitch in the same manner as the strap holders.

8. Fold each short raw end to the same side 3/4”. Place swivel hook ring into fold. Zigzag over raw edge to secure.

9. Attach swivel hooks to D-rings on purse.crossbody bagThat’s all for Lesson 3! Join us next week for Lesson 4, where we will create some fun bonus projects.
